Scout Ship: Rise of the Empyrean Empire: Novel 01 Page 14

“So, remember son, and don’t forget. When you have doubts, and start to notice things, and you will, do not rock the boat. Live a long life, find a wife, and give me some grandchildren.”

She grinned at me as I frowned, “Seriously, other people in the service manage to start families, why can’t I have grandchildren to spoil.”

I rolled my eyes, “Nice try mom, on changing the subject and making me feel uncomfortable.”

She shrugged and didn’t deny it, and then gave me a fierce hug, “There’s a reason I’ve always told you that Michael, don’t forget it.”

Yeah… Don’t rock the boat. But what the hell did that mean, besides the obvious I mean?

Amy spoke in my mind, “You’ve been recalled, please pack and proceed to the spaceport. You’re shuttle to Mars leaves at twenty-two hundred thirty hours.”

Crap. So much for leave, and any time with Katy.

“Any idea what it’s about?” I asked out loud, and my mother’s eyes narrowed, already guessing the truth.

Amy replied, “Negative, but I estimate a high probability the aliens are back.”

Right… aliens. Guess they’d finally decided we were too great a threat and decided on a plan…

  Afterword:

I hope you enjoyed this story, if you did please leave a review. Reviews are the lifeblood of independent authors, and I would greatly appreciate any constructive feedback or opinions. I hope you enjoyed the book, there’s a lot going on and there will be several hanging threads throughout the series, but I’ll try and have a major plot wrapped up in each book, as I believe I’ve done here. Lt. Commander Michael Williams will be back soon in Quarantined: Cassiopeia.

This series explores a couple of ideas. The first is A.I. and the impact that will have on society, something that is hotly debated even today. It’s clear our current society is incompatible, and our self-worth which is tied into having a productive job of some sort, will need to change. That’s a massive shift in thinking, self-worth, and will either be devastating, or freeing, most likely both as our society painfully shifts and mistakes are made.

The UE is one society that could form as a result of A.I., and the impacts that will have on lives, jobs, and other aspects of life. Amazing opportunities and the chance to grow, and also horrible things, like the lack of total privacy that Michael so easily accepts. There is much worse to come. The Empyrean Empire of course, will be another such society to explore in this series. More than likely, the true humanity will fall somewhere in the middle, as this story will show you two extremes.

The second idea I explore in this series I barely even touched on for book one, and will mention at the end of book two. As a hint, it had to do with the implant failure death and the history about mental abilities in the beginning. I don’t want to give even slight spoilers here, but it will be a second theme and major plot point moving forward. I hope to see you for book two, Quarantined: Cassiopeia, which is scheduled for release the first Tuesday of December. October and November will be releases continuing the Katrina Baker and Necromancer’s Blight series.

Due to heroism and long distinguished service he’s elevated to the rank of Lt. Commander when most of his peers have just attained senior lieutenant. His career appears to be going very well.

He’s assigned to a one year exploratory mission to become accustomed to his new rank, one that will finally culminate in reaching a new star system, 61-Virginis, which is just short of twenty-eight light years away from the Sol system, and he’s excited to be one of the first humans in a new solar system as they finish the race across the void between stars in the scout ship Columbus.

There will be challenges he never imagined though, especially not on a simple survey mission. The death of his best friend to a senseless accident is the least of his troubles. Because mankind always thought they were alone in the stars. They’re about to find out they’re wrong, very wrong…

Author’s Note: This series will be told in the first person, the reader will discover things as Michael does, there will be no other points of view excepting the prologue. This is also the start of a series, I will avoid cliffhangers as best I can, and believe it can stand as a series of mostly complete stories with overarching plots.
